The Practice of Awareness

N&M blog pics-2

Many people believe awareness means being calm, present, and mindful all the time.

But that’s not how awareness actually works.

Awareness isn’t about staying present every moment.
It’s about noticing when you’ve drifted away and gently returning.

Again and again.

We All Leave Ourselves

Throughout the day, it’s very normal to lose connection with ourselves.

You might notice it when:

  • you’re scrolling on your phone without realising how long you’ve been there
  • you’re moving through tasks on autopilot
  • your mind is racing ahead to the next thing
  • you suddenly realise you haven’t taken a proper breath in hours

None of this means you’re doing something wrong.

It simply means your attention has moved away from the present moment.

That’s part of being human.

Awareness Begins with Noticing

The real practice begins the moment you notice.

Noticing that your body feels tight.
Noticing that your mind has wandered.
Noticing that you feel disconnected or far away.

That moment of noticing is awareness.

You don’t need to fix anything immediately.
You don’t need to force yourself into calm.

Just noticing is enough.

Returning, Gently

Once you notice, you have an opportunity to return.

This doesn’t have to be complicated.

It might be:

  • taking one slow breath
  • feeling your feet on the ground
  • looking around and noticing where you are
  • placing a hand on your chest or stomach
  • pausing before moving to the next task

These small moments help your body reconnect with the present.

And the more often you practice this, the more natural it becomes.

You Will Drift Again

One of the most important things to remember is this:

You will leave awareness again.

Your mind will wander.
Your attention will drift.
You’ll find yourself back on autopilot.

That’s not failure.

That’s simply part of the rhythm.

Awareness isn’t a place you arrive and stay forever.
It’s something you return to, over and over again.

The Real Practice

The real practice isn’t perfect presence.

It’s noticing when you’ve left and gently coming back.

Each return is a small act of care toward yourself.

And over time, those small returns can begin to change how you experience your days.

Not through pressure.
Not through perfection.

Just through noticing.
